The first day of the Micronesian Regional Championships were conducted in fabulous 'winter' weather at LeoPalace, Guam.
With more than 150 athletes from around Micronesia competing there was a feast of competition, with the best coming in the men's 100 metre final.
The Howard brothers didn't disappoint when they took out the double for the Federated State of Micronesia in a time of 11.21 seconds. Although the time might not have been what they would have liked it was certainly the race to watch.
After some questionable starts in the heats of the 60 metres and 100 metres John Howard took the early lead in the final of the 100 metres with Jack Howard lunging at the line in the final stride to take out the event from his twin brother. NMI's Tyrone Omar was too slow out of the blocks, but hung on to take third place.
The women's 100 metres looked like going to Felicia Saburo, Palau, after strong runs in the 60 metres and 100 metre heats. But Mystique Rosa Jone was too good in the final and was never in doubt when she clocked a time of 12.90. Mystique took advantage of her final training in Cairns and decided that the 60 metres might take the edge off her 100 metres - a decision that proved to her advantage.
There was a lot of other action on the track and in the field. For a full set of results go to Competitions on the left hand side of the OAA Homepage and go to Micronesian Regional Championships 2007 - Results Day 1.
The final day of competition will start at 7.00am on Saturday.
